Wes Anderson is the undisputed prince of dreamy aesthetics and wide-angle shots—the ringmaster of a cinematic circus full of oddball stars and quirky character actors. He might just be the reason Urban Outfitters sold so many record players in the 2010s and why half of us flirted with the Twee aesthetic.
Whether you think his hyper-stylized films are inspired or insufferable, there’s no denying their impact on film, photography, and how we see the world—through a pastel lens, of course.
I’ll admit it: I love Wes Anderson. Sure, his films can feel melancholic and slow at times, but these technicolor films light up my occipital lobe like a pinball machine. The dry wit, vintage visuals, and delightfully neurotic characters keep me coming back.
One of my all-time favorites? The Grand Budapest Hotel. It feels like a time capsule housing an old world European elegance that may no longer exist. From the rich textures of the lobby, to dollhouse-like outside shots of the hotel, to the intricate details of each character- it really speaks to me. I particularly enjoy the performance from Ralph Fiennes who fully embodied the character of Gustave- the hotel’s concierge.
Anderson’s influence reaches beyond just his stable of Hollywood actors and film school fanboys. You have seasoned filmmakers like Martin Scorsese singing his praises to entire etsy shops dedicated to paintings of his film stills.
