Of all the trends I’ve seen on TikTok, the following one has captured a special place in my heart. It tickles my moody Whimsigoth fancy. The part of me that grew up on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Practical Magic.
What is Whimsigoth?
But channeling this alternative aesthetic isn’t new. Before TikTok there was a resurgence of this style on Instagram and Tumblr before it. Young people have been channeling their inner Phoebe Buffay for years.
Here’s a confluence of Sun & Moon inspired outfits from sisters @liberty.mai and @mathilda.mai that were posted on reddit.
A recent Whimsigoth trend has revolved around styling inspired by the Sun vs Moon.
The idea is that there’s a color palette or style type that best suits you- “Sun” being warm toned and bright, whereas the “Moon” side of the spectrum is more dark and moody.
Along with this trend has come a conversation around empowerment. Where women are reclaiming their styles after losing themselves in relationships. With the lesson being to embrace yourself and instincts instead of molding yourself to fit someone else’s.
