For example, in 2023 Dick’s Sporting Goods reported a 233% increase in WNBA merchandise sales compared to the previous season. Both the WNBA Official online store and the flagship location in New York City were up a combined 601% from 2023.

Additionally, NCAA women’s basketball saw advertising revenues jump nearly 200% year-over-year, driven by record TV viewership.

The increase in professional womens’ sports viewership has even led to a surge in the number of female and queer spaces focused on professional womens’ sports. 

Bars like The Sports Bra in Portland have drawn in huge crowds and reportedly pulled in nearly $1M in revenue within eight months. Since then, the number of women’s sports bars has skyrocketed—from just one in 2022 to 12+ venues, with projections for even more women’s sports bars by the end of 2025. 

And yet, despite the sky-high ratings and clear demand for more, women’s leagues still receive a fraction of the investment and visibility.
